Two ways to assess your heart
Your consultation helps determine the appropriate test and whether exercise testing is suitable.
A resting or “normal” ECG records your heart’s electrical activity while you lie still. Small adhesive electrodes connect to the ECG machine.
Consultation included. The recording provides information about your heart rate and rhythm.
An exercise ECG records your heart’s electrical activity while you walk on a treadmill. The workload increases gradually while you are monitored.
Consultation included. We assess suitability before the test.
Brandmed interpretation
Brandmed provides ECG interpretation; this is not an in-person cardiologist appointment. The approximate one-hour turnaround is not the total appointment duration.
Also available onsite
We offer in-house troponin T (Trop T) blood testing when clinically indicated. This test can help assess heart muscle injury and is considered alongside your symptoms, ECG and other findings.
A troponin result is one part of a clinical assessment. One normal result does not always rule out a heart attack. Depending on your symptoms and when they started, you may need repeat tests or hospital assessment.
Ask the practice about the cost of this additional test when booking.

Before your appointment
No. You can book directly with the practice without a referral. Your consultation helps determine which test is appropriate and whether a treadmill test is suitable for you.
A resting ECG costs R750 cash, including consultation. A treadmill stress ECG costs R950 cash, including consultation. Ask the practice about the cost of troponin T or any other additional tests.
The tests are covered by most medical aids and billed at scheme rates. Payment depends on your plan, available benefits and any authorisation requirements. Check your cover before the appointment.
ECGs are assessed through Brandmed’s cardiologist-supervised interpretation programme. This is an interpretation service, not an in-person consultation with a cardiologist.
Brandmed’s interpretation usually takes about an hour after the ECG is submitted. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed turnaround or the total appointment length. The practice will explain the findings and next steps.
Bring your medication list, medical aid details and any previous heart test results. For a treadmill test, wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking. Ask the practice for food, drink and medication instructions when booking. Do not stop prescribed medication unless your clinician tells you to.
Troponin T is a blood test that can help assess heart muscle injury. It is used when clinically indicated and interpreted alongside symptoms, the ECG and other findings. One normal result does not always rule out a heart attack; further testing or hospital assessment may be needed.
The time depends on whether you need a resting ECG, a treadmill test or additional assessment. Ask the practice when booking so we can advise how much time to allow.
