Common questions
What is PEP?
PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is a short course of medicine taken after a possible exposure to HIV, for example after unprotected sex or a needle-stick injury. It must be started as soon as possible and within 72 hours.
What is PrEP?
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is medicine taken regularly by people who are HIV-negative to prevent infection if they're at ongoing risk. Before starting, we do an HIV test and baseline bloods, then review you regularly.
Is HIV testing confidential?
Yes. Your results and consultations are completely confidential.
Can you start HIV treatment?
Yes. We can start treatment when appropriate and monitor your progress, side effects and blood results over time.
Does medical aid cover this?
Many medical aids cover HIV testing, PrEP, PEP and treatment. Bring your medical aid details and we'll guide you.
