When a hydration drip helps

Gastro: vomiting & diarrhoea

Vomiting and diarrhoea drain fluids and salts faster than you can replace them. If you can't keep fluids down, a drip rehydrates you quickly, and we can add anti-nausea medication where appropriate.

Heat & exercise

Heat exhaustion, a long day outdoors or an endurance event can leave you dizzy, cramping and drained. A drip replaces fluids and electrolytes.

Hangover

Alcohol makes your body lose fluid. A drip with fluids and electrolytes, plus anti-nausea or pain medication where appropriate, can help you recover faster.

After illness

Flu, fever or a few days of not eating and drinking properly can leave you dehydrated and weak.

Signs of dehydration

  • Dizziness, especially when you stand up
  • Headache and tiredness
  • Muscle cramps

Drip or drinks?

A drip may be the better option if

  • You're vomiting and can't keep fluids down

Common questions

Do I need a drip, or can I just drink fluids?

If you can keep fluids down and feel only mildly unwell, an oral rehydration solution is usually enough. If you're vomiting, dizzy or getting worse, a drip rehydrates you much faster.

How quickly will I feel better?

Many people feel better during the drip or soon after. How quickly you recover also depends on the cause, which we'll treat too.

Do you treat the cause as well?

Yes. This is a medical visit: we assess and diagnose you, give medication where needed, and arrange tests if something more serious is suspected.

How much does it cost?

Drips start from R800, depending on what's added. A consultation may also apply. WhatsApp us for current prices.

Does medical aid cover a hydration drip?

If the drip is medically needed, such as for gastro or dehydration, it may be claimable depending on your plan. Hangover drips are paid for by card or cash.

Can I get a sick note?

Yes, after your consultation, if you're not fit for work.

When should I go to hospital instead?

Go to an emergency unit if you're confused or very drowsy, have fainted, haven't passed urine for 8 hours or more, or have blood in your vomit or stool, severe stomach pain or chest pain.
